Homeschool Planner has been updated for the 2018/19 year

2018/2019 Homeschool Planners now available

I’m so happy to announce that I have finished updating the Journey Through Love homeschool planner for the 2018/2019 school year!  The digital PDF file is available on Etsy now, and printed versions are available until we run out!  There are currently just a few left.
18 19 Cover Photo
I have been using this planner for several years now, and though I realize I may be biased, the layout has really been perfect for homeschooling my 3 kids.  There are a couple new features and updates for this version that I found I constantly wished I had when using it in previous years.
First is just a subtle change of font, but I think it gives it a cleaner look.  I also removed the header titles on some of the planning pages so you can enter your own instead of being limited to what I designate it for, or having to scratch it out.
Monthly Example
This is an example of the monthly overview. Note the orange spaces are now blank, allowing you to enter your own headings.
Towards the beginning, I added two new pages for a book list.  I wanted a space where I could make a list of books we wanted to read, as well as a list of books we have read, and I wanted to have it with me all the time.  I usually take my planner with me to the library, so it only made sense to add a couple book list pages!
Book List
I also found myself wishing there were a couple extra pages for me to write notes of things I wanted to remember later, or passwords, logins, etc. so I added 3 pages at the back of the planner for notes.
Notes
I love that the planner images change monthly, and the colors change seasonally.  My favorite feature, being the planner nerd that I am, is the advance planning pages.  There is a year at a glance calendar in the very beginning with a spot to write special dates to remember.
18 19 Year Calendar
Then there is the 12 month planning overview.  I like to use this space to plan out what topics we will be focusing on each month, any field trips, etc that we will be attending, as well as noting holidays.
twelve month planning overview
Before each quarter, there are quarterly planning pages where you can record notes for each month, what curriculum or resources you will be using, other notes, and even a place for a weekly schedule.  (The colors of these change quarterly as well)
Quarterly Planning Example
Earlier in the post I shared a monthly overview photo (of October).  In each monthly overview there is a calendar with space to write birthdays, holidays, and events.  Beneath it is a large space for any notes you like.  On the page to the right of the monthly calendar, there are several blocks with headers that you can use any way you wish!  I personally make a block for books we need to get at the library, field trips, and projects with necessary materials with need by dates.  As I said before, I took the header titles off so you can label them to suit your needs.
That brings us to the bulk of the planner – the weekly/daily plan.  At the top left corner, there is a calendar for the current month with the current week circled.  Two blocks at the top make space to note special events, a shopping list – anything you want to highlight or remember.  On the left hand side of each page are a series of empty bubbles. These you can use as subject headers, your children’s names, or whatever you need.  I use the top one for me, the next 3 for my kids so we each get a row.  Each day also has a menu planning block at the bottom for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It helps me so much to have my menu right there in my planner!  On the bottom right of the right hand page is a large lined space for notes that you can use however you like.  For those of you who use the Waldorf method, I have made each day of the week header coincide with the Waldorf color of the day so you don’t have to try and remember what color it should be.  I also think it just looks pretty and cheerful!
Weekly Example
And it all ends in the 3 note pages!  I really enjoy making this planner each year and I hope you enjoy it, too!  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.  I love to hear suggestions and what works or doesn’t work for you.  You can also contact me if you would prefer to have a printed copy.  I normally only send these to the printer once a year, so once they sell out, they’re gone until the next year.  They can be preordered for a discounted rate.
Happy Planning!

2015/2016 homeschool planner

I had good intentions for this year.  Could it really be November already?  I am happy to say I did, at least, get a new planner created.  I had so much fun with the woodland design and am so thankful to Harper Finch for allowing me to use her adorable designs in the planner.

This planner was both fun, and challenging for me.  Once I got going, it was a blast and all came together so well!  The challenge was deciding what to improve from the last version, and choosing a format.  My downfall, I think, was too many options!  I am one who want to please everyone, so I made several formats available.  However, it seemed to be overwhelming to my wonderful customers, and I have to agree.  I didn't have a way to really explain the differences in the planners, so everyone just thought "which one do I need?!"  I also noticed that many of you preferred last years version - the spiral watercolor.  I am unsure if it was because of the wonderful watercolor images, or the format.  (Feedback welcome!!)  I did keep aspects of the previous version and designed it with Waldorf and Oak Meadow homeschooling in mind once again.  (Though I didn't label them as specifically - some thought it was a little too restricting)

As for my good intentions, well, I have big plans every year!  I had planned to get a student planner out, as well as an A5 format for those of you who prefer a smaller planner.  I did make this planner less seasonally inspired so I wouldn't exclude anyone in the Southern Hemisphere.  And of course, I somehow let a mistake or two slip past me.  It is such an embarrassing thing to have happen.  I am thankful to those of you who pointed it out with grace and understand that I am human.  As of right now, I am still just a one-woman show and had quite a bit going on this summer during the planner creation.

Don't forget, you can still get them in my Etsy shop in both PDF files as well as a printed and bound version!

So, what are your thoughts?  Did you like the new planner?  Prefer the spiral watercolor?  Which format do you prefer?  Or... what do you wish it would have instead!?

Well, life happened again!

Goodness.  So much for keeping up with the blog and Friday posts.  The very week after I posted saying I'd like to post a "this moment" post every Friday, we got an offer on our house!  Such great news!  But it also took my focus back off of this space.  I do think things will calm down soon and I'll be able to re-focus, but for now so much is happening.

We closed on our old home April 17th - such a bitter sweet day.  It is hard to leave a home you have been in for 13 years and raised all your babies in.  But we are off and ready for new adventures!  This weekend we have helpers (family) coming to move our belongings into a 10X25 storage unit.  I think moving into storage is harder than a new home!  Especially when you do not know when you will be moving out of storage.  We are planning on being in between homes for approximately 6 months.  It isn't going to be easy, but we are thankful for the opportunities we have ahead of us.

That's what is going on right now. Hopefully all will go well and we'll be completely out of this house May 3rd, and I can begin to focus on making the NEW 2015/2016 planner.  I am so looking forward to it!  It's my favorite time of year :)

Blessings!

New Journey Through Love planner!

A couple months ago, I released the new version of my homeschool planner.  I am even more pleased with this version than the last - what I love most is the artwork!  The cover art was created by a friend of mine - Paige, who runs the shop Whimsi Doll where she creates lots of amazing artistic creations.  I also love the watercolor artwork on each page inside.  Below, you can see how each month has a different watercolor.  These are carried throughout the planner.  I just love them <3, though they are not by Paige.

I included lots of space for planning.  Each "quarter" has this (below) planning section.

Then between each month section, you will have a month calendar and planning space for your resources, field trips, notes etc.

For the weekly view, I made space for form drawing, festivals and holidays or upcoming events, and plenty of planning space.  I personally use the spaces as circle time, morning main lesson, afternoon main lesson, and leave the last spot for notes or events happening that day.  There is also menu planning space at the bottom of each week day, and a notes section for groceries, to-do's, etc.

Another way you could use the space is a block for each child, and a block for lessons the family will do together.  But be creative and use it however works for you!

The planner is available on Etsy, there is a traditional (not Waldorf specific) version available there as well.  This version is 15 months (June 2014-Aug 2015) so remember to not print the months that you no longer need!  I am hoping to have a printed version available very soon!

Do you use the Journey Through Love planner?  Tell me what you think!  I'd also love to have you link back to a blog review you have done!

Blessings,
Nikki

School Rhythm

Getting a good School Rhythm is high on my priority list for my New Beginning challenge to myself.  When I have a good school rhythm, it helps our entire day.  Lucky for me, our first school block for January is a math block focusing on time/calendar/rhythm.  I'm going to take advantage of this and really focus on our weekly rhythm, and teach Jujubee about daily rhythms.

Another reason I feel this is important, is because we decided to pull Cocobear from her playschool, so she will need more activities to keep her happy and allow me to do lessons with Jujubee.

Cocobear at her Christmas program with her class.  She is second from the right in the top row.

I had a nice chat with Melisa at Waldorf Essentials, and she helped me realize that in order for us to have a good rhythm, I really need to work on my sleep.  Kaybug has been bedsharing or cosleeping with me for the past 18 months, and she wakes a lot.  So we are working on getting her into her own bed and me getting more sleep.  While working on that, I am working on making sure we bring our school rhythm back.

Our January Rhythm

Wake up
Morning chores
Prepare and eat breakfast, clean up
Gather for circle time
Main Lesson
Free play (if time)
Lunch
Naps for the younger two, handwork or reading for Jujubee and I.  (or dinner prep if needed)
Afternoon Lesson
Free play
Prepare and eat dinner, clean up
Free play
Bedtime routine (bath, pjs, teeth, tea, story, prayers, sleep)

I am working on having at least two weeks planned in my Homeschool Planner at a time, and continuing to plan in my free time.

2013/2014 Waldorf Homeschool Planner

It is complete!  I worked so hard to make a beautiful, simple, easy to use homeschool planner for myself (and others!) and here it is.

I love the artwork.  I made sure to change the graphics by season.  It is for sale at http://hyenacart.com/stores/nikkislittlehouse/ for an intro price of $15, which will change to $25. (and free bonus pages/forms coming soon if you purchase by October 31, 2013)  It includes 138 gorgeous pages of planning fun.  Lots of room for yearly, weekly and monthly planning.  Places for rhythm, form drawing, festival planning, notes, meal planning and more!

Homeschool Helper - a planning app!

I am a planner.  I love to plan everything, so that makes homeschooling even more fun for me.  I am also an office supply and organization junkie, always on the search for the perfect homeschool planner. I have to admit, I'm pretty happy with my current paper planner.  (I totally scrapped the online planner from mywellplannedday.com and homeschoolschedutrack.com)

On a whim, I decided to look for homeschool apps for my iPad.  I have searched plenty of times and found nothing but figured it had been a while since I last searched.  WOW!  When I found Homeschool Helper, I immediately thought... I need this.  They had me from the beautiful design, but all the awesome features made it ridiculously necessary.  And... it is only $4.99.  Ha!  Boy are they giving the expensive planners a run for their money!  I've used them, and they fail miserably in the digital department.  Obviously some people just love paper.  I am one of those people.  But, I think I could stick with this planner.  It is SO easy to use and beautiful.

I've tried to find things to change about this app, and besides making it available on multiple devices via cloud, and allowing a student login (where they can view and check off work, but not edit) I can't think of anything it doesn't have. Attendance tracking, lesson planning, scheduling, field trips, grades, reports... You name it!  You can effortlessly use it for multiple students, add your planning information, and view your plan on a beautiful format. I was pretty skeptical at first, not wanting to be fooled by the initial "wow" factor like I had been before. Especially considering it was a fraction of the cost, and I only had to pay ONCE. How could it possibly be good?

Well, if I wasn't sold before, I am now. I love it, and will be using it to plan our next year as soon as my curriculum arrives. What do you use when planning?  Do you enjoy apps as much as I do?

My homeschool planner

I searched, searched, and searched some more to find that "perfect" planner.  The one that would make this homeschool journey easier, keep us on track, organized and ready to go....

It didn't exist.  Well, at least I never found it.  I did like the organizer over at www.wellplannedday.com, but wasn't willing to pay that much for an organizer that I couldn't edit, and they had some subjects listed that didn't fit our day.  I do use www.homeschoolskedtrack.com which is a free online planner.  It does it's job, but I'm a paper kind of girl on certain things, this being one of them.

So, what do you do when you can't find your perfect planner?  You make your own!  I looked through the free forms, taking advice from so many seasoned homeschoolers.  I hated the forms.  They were generic, plain, and didn't fit me.

Sooo, I went all out, and designed from scratch.  I have to admit, I somewhat went off of that super snazzy planner over at Well Planned Day, and tweaked it to fit my family.  I also should admit that I did all this in Pages, which is a Mac version of Microsoft Word.  I'm quite impressed with myself.  ;)  Basically what I am saying is, if you can create a shape or text box in a Word-type program, you can do this too!  And it took a lot less time than all the searching I did.  Sheeesh!  I'll never have that time back...

Anyway, here it is, in all it's glory.  It's not professional, but it gets the job done.  I used the ProClick binding machine to bind it myself.  That thing has paid for itself already!  (You can see my review on that in an earlier post).

Cover; I laminated scrapbook paper and kept the covers slightly larger than my pages.

Our year schedule, and our local schools schedule (so we can plan around her friends)

Daily schedule, form from Simply Charlotte Mason.  (I later created my own in Pages)

Calendar and monthly notes.  Books needed this month, field trips and activities, and monthly bills.

Our first week, almost filled in

Close-up of Thurs-Sun (right side).  I made a box for weekly priorities, the dinner menu, and our weekend activities.

So far, the only thing I would change is that I wish I'd have made a larger notes section.

What kind of planner do you use?  Are you a paper or electronic type of person?  I would LOVE to see a good iPad planner app that would sync online (like my cozi app).  For now, I use my paper planner and homeschoolskedtrack.com and it works for me!
